Counting conventions
- Characters are counted as grapheme clusters. Full-width and half-width characters, punctuation and digits each count as one. Combined letters and emoji sequences also count as one.
- Line breaks are excluded from both character counts. “Without whitespace” also excludes spaces, full-width spaces, tabs and other whitespace.
- English words are groups of Latin letters or digits. Apostrophes, hyphens and numeric separators can join a word: don't, well-known and 3.14 each count as one. Japanese text is excluded.
- Lines are separated by actual line breaks, not visual wrapping. Empty text has zero lines; a trailing line break adds an empty line.
- Submission systems and other software may count differently. Follow your destination’s rules for the final check.
