What the result means

DPI depends on print size

The same image has a higher effective DPI when printed smaller and a lower DPI when printed larger.

Downscaling is usually safe

Reducing excess pixels is normally safe. Upscaling changes the pixel count but cannot create lost detail.

Vector figures are different

SVG and vector PDF artwork can scale without pixelation and should not be processed with this raster-image tool.

Publication requirements vary by journal. Always follow the instructions for your destination journal; for example, the Nature figure guide discusses print dimensions, vector artwork, and raster-image resolution.
